Medical Device Agency Safety Notice

The Medical Devices Agency have published Safety Notice MDA SN9825, regarding latex gloves.

The notice advises that the use of powdered gloves can increase the risk or exacerbate an allergic reaction, and requires managers to ensure that policies are in place to deal with the latex allergy issue.

Purchasers are advised to consider extractable protein levels when buying gloves. It also refers to the Device Bulletin issued in 1996 ("Latex sensitisation in the health care setting (use of latex gloves). April 1996"), the full text of which is now available as a PDF document on the MDA web site.
