UKAS Accreditation

SMTL is the only UKAS accredited NHS laboratory in the UK dedicated to the testing and evaluation of surgical dressing and medical devices.

SMTL performs work for the NHS and the healthcare industry, including test method development and clinical trials.

Hydrocolloid Dressings

To BP 1993 monographs.

Gelling characteristics.
Moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR).
Fluid handling properties.
Conformability.

Alginates

To BP 1993 monographs.

Gelling characteristics.
Fluid handling properties.

Bandages

To BS 7505:1995.

Classification of bandages into performance groups.
Clinical evaluations.

Stockings

Compression profile measurement of compression hosiery to BS 7672:1993 and BS 6612:1985.

Hydrogels

Fluid handling properties.
Dehydration characteristics.
Stability studies on medicated gels.

Sharps Bins

Testing to British Standard 7320 for sharps containers.

Examination & Surgeons Gloves

Testing to UK DoH TSS specification (this standard is, however, now obsolete), BS 4005 (Surgical Gloves) and EN 455 parts 1 & 2.

Protein Testing and Endotoxin testing are also available.

Urinary Catheters

Testing to BS 1695, including toxicity testing.

Medical Fabrics

Barrier properties, including microbiological penetration and strike-through testing.
Tensile strength testing.

Environmental Monitoring

Clean room monitoring.
COSHH Monitoring.

Biological

Microbiological testing, including sterility testing, anti-bacterial properties of medicated products.
Bioburden testing of medical devices and instruments.
Endotoxin testing using the LAL quantitative method.
Protein testing for latex products.
Cell culture facilities, including cytotoxicity testing and biocompatibility studies.

Miscellaneous

Tensile strength testing of films, fabrics and filaments.
Casting materials evaluations.
SMTL are Presently developing an in-vitro model for evaluating the properties of new dressing materials.

SMTL Personnel

SMTL presently employs 17 members of staff.

The Acting Director, Peter Phillips, has been responsible for the testing of medical disposables for the Welsh NHS since 1983. He sits on numerous British Standards committees, including those responsible for Gloves, Intravenous Sets and Plastics Tubing.
